Default PVP neophite

I have been out of Guild Wars for about 8 months now and with the introduction of Factions I have been playing it here and there. I did nothing but PVE in Prophecies and may be why I left for a while so I am looking to PVP and am wondering what is the best way to get started. I have been PVEing in Factions a little as well with the Assasin class to see what it is like but am now getting ready to create a PVP character and am looking for guidance on the best way to do that. Is there a good build for new PVPers that will help me get into groups or just start spamming NOOB Looking to Learn?

Best way to get into PvP is to join a guild that can help teach you PvP. Your specific interests will determine what guild to look into.

For PvP, are you interested in RA, TA, HA, or GvG? They're rather different beasts.

Are you interested in monking? Utility/Support? Or damage (generally warrior)?

Read around these forums for a bit to get of an idea of what is out there as well, but until you answer those basic questions, you can't really go anywhere.

First things first. Forget everything you've learned in PvE

Go to the priest of balthazar. Learn all skills by head ( yes ).

Then find a PvP build, with skills you've unlocked, and test it. RA isn't good pvp, but it gives you a chance to fight against humans.

Some steps

1) As suggested, make sure you can recogneize skills
2) Learn about the game mechanics, read topics about kiting, focus swapping, etc. and practice these (somebody started a topic about learning those things...)
3) Find a easy, much used build that suits you.

Now the hard part:
4) Go to TA with some friends. Make sure you have 1 warrior, 1 anti-warrior, 1 anti-caster and 1 boon-prot.

Well to answer some of the questions I have always been a Damage dealer in all other games I have played ( warrior or rogue ) though I have had experience as a Support player as well.

I was more interested in the GvG aspect of PVP though would not mind trying the others out to see what fits my play style better.

Now time to surf the forums for more questions.

Don't be stupid, sitting for hours on the one screen learning all skill descriptions by heart isn't going to do anyone any good. Knowledge of skill effects come to you naturally the longer you play.

Yea, that's how I learned most of my skill effects, by experience. However, if you're jumping in I woudl suggest at least glancing over the skills so that you're familiar with them, and also making sure to glance over the skill icons (especially for hexes). If I had time I might actually type up a list of some of the most important skills to know, but I don't. If you play for long enough and watch observer (make sure to keep your mouse over the skill usage things), you should eventually get all the important stuff.

Best way to learn the skills is make a mesmer and play the campaign with her. You will have to learn all the skills in order to counter them.

If by all the skills you mean two, empathy and backfire, then yes. In PvE, it doesn't matter what the monsters are using because the physical damage dealers will always just attack through empathy and the casters will cast through backfire. That's how you counter them. You don't need to know anything about their specific skills. Memorizing and quizzing yourself about skills won't work, either, as it is all theory and has no chance for in-game application. Play, play, and play some more, wherever it is (don't do too much random arena please) and you will find a role that you enjoy and become more knowledgeable about different skills and strategies. Make your own builds. Submit them to the forums or send them to me. Have us shoot them down and tear them apart completely, and then don't get down about it. Learn from it. It's a process. There is no campaign or memorization that can get you through it any easier.
